I’m a computational biology researcher. I’ve studied in chronological order: molecular biology, plant development, plant breeding, bioinformatics, then machine learning for computer vision. After some reflection I’ve decided to return to my origins and combine machine learning with molecular biology via language models. Language models have been the catalyst for NLP (Natural Language Processing) for working with human languages. However, there has been less attention given to proteins and genes as parts of the language of biology. There is much work to be transferred to the domain of biology to achieve advancements like enzyme engineering, pathway optimization, and more.
